TRICIA SUMARIJANTO
Tricia Sumarijanto is known as ‘Bu Guru’ (Miss Teacher) of angklung in the Washington, D.C. Her love of music and children began during high school when she taught kindergarteners how to play the organ. Her childhood goal was to become a teacher as an adult; we can see that she has realized her dream as she now teaches piano and angklung, a traditional musical instrument from West Java.
Since 2009, Tricia has been the music arranger and teacher for the House of Angklung (HOA) group located in Washington D.C. The group often appears at Indonesian embassy forums and international events. ‘Bu Guru’ has also been a teacher and the conductor of Indonesian Kids Performing Arts (IKPA) for nearly two year (2009- January 2012).
Through her great love and passion for angklung, Tricia has contributed to the exposure of Indonesian culture in the United States. In 2011, Tricia and HOA contributed to the record-breaking event of the world’s largest angklung ensemble ever assembled; the record breaking event took place in D.C. with 5182 people from many different nations playing angklung together in unison. Tricia is also active in promoting angklung through the program called Angklung Goes to School; the program is supported by the Cultural and Performing Arts Program of the Montgomery County Public School system since 2012.
Tricia completed her Master’s Degree in Organizational Science from George Washington University in 2010 and graduated as a Master of Management UI and Public Relations FISIP UI. Tricia is currently a board member of University of Indonesia Alumni Association (ILUNI) - USA Chapter.
